Dan - The Simpson

It's a List. Go Figure.

  • So first off, the inconsequential-but-cool: Jumper
  • More consequential. That Olympics thing I've talked to some of you about? Yeah, well, the chances of it happening are now next to zero for 2008.
  • Even at my decrepit age, however, 2012 isn't out of the question.
  • More on all that later.
  • Did my camera geek folks get a chance to put eyeballs on the two video links I posted last night? What did you think?
  • Speaking of cameras, as much as I want the G9, I think I am going to go with the A570 for now. It'll be a good-enough camera while I save up my money for a DSLR, and take a class.
  • I'm getting into that whole self-improvement thing -- cooking classes, a photography class, and krav maga are all in my future.
  • I have an ingrown beard hair. This is both painful and annoying. More the latter, really. But still. Shit.
  • I have been a good little geek and not gone scampering out to buy Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass yet. And the urge is strong -- a sequel to Wind-Waker? And on the DS? GIV PLZ.
  • Oh, the phone solution for the Tivo did not work worth a damn. I'm guessing that that has something to do with trying to send modem data over a VoIP connection. Call it a hunch. Whatever the case, I ordered a Tivo-branded 802.11g dongle, and that should be arriving today. Then I shall consign the Microsoft dongle to the trash heap. Because that's all the motherfucker is good for.
  • I should get to work. More later.

Krav Maga looks awesome. Maybe I should take up that instead of Tae Kwon Do once my back heals.
Yeah. I had a fighting instructor in the army who constantly referred to tae kwon do as the "Las Vegas danceline -- all show, no substance"...

If I'm going to fight, it's going to be in such a way as to pull out my opponent's eyeballs and shove them up their ass.
That, and I'd rather make the most efficient use of my free time. Makes little sense to spend 4+ hours a week learning a martial art if 40% of it is philosophy and learning Japanese words for things. All I really want is to be able to defend myself properly.

San Francisco chapter, sweet!
Exactly! There's something to be said for efficiency.
I am sadly videoless at work.

Classes schmasses.
Looks to be an interesting movie. It's based on a sci-fi book that I haven't read, though, so I can't speak to the quality of the story.
do you ride at the velodrome? it looks so appealing to me, i've wondered about it many times. although I'm scardey cat about it.
I haven't much velodrome experience, which is where the problem comes up. I have the ability/power output to qualify, but I have to post a qualifying time by the end of December. And it can only be done at the new velodrome in L.A.

So my plan is to start racing track this spring, as soon as it's open -- the 4km pursuit, the 1km time trial, and the flying 200m. I'm going to try to get a spot in the trials for '12, I think.
Whats it going to take? A plane ticket and a bike? I'll kick in $200 for the ticket.
A bike, a place to stay in L.A. for two months that's right next door to the velodrome so I can get my chops up, and a way to keep paying my bills while I'm gone.

Pretty insurmountable at this point. 2012 ain't out of the question, though. We put Kent Bostick in the 4km pursuit at the age of 38. There's no reason I can't do the same.
I use VoIP for the phone line connected to TiVo. I had service in Atlanta, and then it was about 50/50 whether or not the connection would survive all the way through the download. But since I moved to New York, it seems to work just fine. *shrug* Might have to do with your provider.

Not that you asked, of course. ;)
Yeah, I can't even initiate a download here, which sucks. So I've got the TiVo-branded 802.11g dongle, and that should resolve the issue.
Linksys sells uber-cheap ATA (analog telephone adapters) that allow you to instantiate modem calls if you wish. IDk what the differential would be between those and the wifi dongles though... just an fyi
Already have the WiFi. UPS delivered it to my office today. :-)
Those video links were pretty damned amazing. I fully agree with the comment "I want this in Photoshop immediately."
Oh yeah. While we were watching them at work, I was like, "This needs to be in CS4. Get on it."

And can you imagine what's going to happen to file sizes when each pixel has "depth" info associated with it?
Most VOIP systems don't play well with modems. VOIP is optimized for the frequencies used by the human voice and to reduce the size of the data stream the codecs 'throw away' all the signal outside of that range before encoding it. That includes a lot of the spectrum used by modems, which is a wee bit of a problem.

But the WiFi adapter is a better solution anyway. There are a number of features on TiVo these days that simple don't work over the modem and are only enabled when it is connected to broadband.

(I run [info]tivolovers and TiVoLovers.com)
Thanks. I kinda figured that that was what was going on. :-)

beard ingrown? get an ingrown on your special area and we'll talk. : O
I'm a cyclist...I shave from the tops of my feet up. I've had the ingrown hair on the special area, and OMG IT MAKES ME WANT TO DIE!!!1!
That Olympics thing I've talked to some of you about? Yeah, well, the chances of it happening are now next to zero for 2008.

What happened?
Time ran out...long story.
I definitely want to see Jumper. That looks fantastic.
